Need help with deciding whether to add a 2nd hard drive to my computer or a new larger hard drive.?
I have a 6-year old Gateway PC that has run out of space. I have the option of either adding a 2nd hard drive OR adding a new hard drive with more storage. Here's my dilemma - most of the space taken up on my computer now is music files for my iPod, which I want to keep on my computer for syncing purposes. When I add music to my computer, it automatically gets saved to my C Drive, which is where my iTunes Library recognizes it. If I get a 2nd hard drive (which will be the most economical way) and move my music there, my iTunes Library wouldn't know where my music was and I wouldn't be able to play my music. I don't know if there is a way to change the default to save music to a different hard drive vs. the automatic save to the C Drive(?). Probably the easiest thing would be to get a new, larger hard drive (more cost), but I thought I would open this question up to anyone who might have knowledge of how this works. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Thanks so much!
Bare in mind that quite large HDs are now relatively cheap. If you are doing this yourself and don't have much experience with computers, you should just add a 2nd drive as the C drive has your operating system installed and if you remove it your computer won't work.
If you are going to take it to a shop, they should be able to transfer the contents of your C drive to a new larger replacement drive (the advantage being as far as iTunes is concerned it's still the C drive). This may be more expensive than having them install a 2nd drive and certainly more expensive than adding a 2nd one yourself.
Regarding iTunes, you can move all the music files to your new HD. Once you have moved them there open iTunes and:
1. Go to Edit menu.
2. Select Preferences.
3. Select the Advanced tab.
4. In the general sub-tab it should list your current music folder location. Click change.
5. Browse for the folder in your new HD where you moved your music, select it and press ok.
6. Make sure the "Keep iTunes Music Folder Organised" checkbox is selected (beneath the directory listing box).
7. Click OK at the botton of the preferences screen.
8. iTunes will now update - your music is on your new HD and iTues recognises it.
I hope this helps!
