Whereas you can 'study the social interactions of people and groups, trace the origin and growth of social processes, and analyze the influence of group activities on individual members' (Wikipedia) - the essence of the individual is missing from the equation.
It is ironic, personal variables are infinite, but social variables are finite.
I lean more towards the uniqueness of the individual and negate the concept of a collective consciousness - or place it in the backseat.
If collective consciousness was music, it would be a discordant harmony.
