As others have metionned, Gnome is a desktop option. It is often preferred with people of limited Linux skills because its configuration options are more limited than KDE (it is easy to get lost in KDE's options!).

You can install Gnome on most Linux distros, as you can KDE. I would recommend you install Linux, choosing Gnome (if it is an option), tinker and learn a bit, and maybe then try KDE.
