The first day they all huddled together in a shoal as I expected, but now they have spread themselves out all over the tank, with their own little areas and if the others enter their area they chase them out! I know they like to chase, but are they normally territorial like that?!
I'm in the last stage of cycling, I tried to do it fishlessly, but it appears it didn't work as the ammonia spiked when I added the danios, but it is dropping steadily now. So all should be well in a day or two.
My main worry is when I start to introduce more fish to the tank, I am planning on having a peaceful community tank, clown loaches, some tetras, dwarf gourami's and possibly an angel or two.
My worry is that my danios who have established their territory will become picked on/scared of the fish, particulary the angel fishes, with their tendancy to pick on smaller fishies.
Anyone with any advice?! That's normal. I have about that many zebra danios and they do their own thing and don't really school. I think it takes a pretty large number of them to make them school, which isn't really practical in aquariums because they're too small to have that many.
It's also normal to see a spike when you add fish... you really need fish to cycle.
Aaand, don't worry, there shouldn't be a problem with the danios. They're fast little fishes - they'll be able to get away. Make sure you have some hiding places and plants and such for hiding, of course.
My danios live with my big huge red tailed shark (now that's a territorial / agressive fish!) and a gourami and they do fine.
