Use of metaphor? Is it effective to use metaphors in a short piece of creative writing that are not related to each other? Does it make the story seem disjointed in any way?

eg. The trees are standing still, guarding our neighbourhood. and A sea of bodies crowd the hall, creating a mexican wave as people stand and sit. (lol just made these two up to give you guys an example)

And the first one is personification, only the second is a metaphor. Unless the trees aren't actually trees, but the sentence doesn't portray that.
