What I would do is just Google the book. Like, Google, "Is blah blah public domain?" (Keep in mind that if a company publishes a book that is older than 100 years old, it could be possible they bought permissions for reproduction.) Or find a recent copy of the book, contact the publisher, and ask if it is.
